What are you supposed to say about a sprawling movie like this, universally recognized as a master work by one of the best directors still working today? Martin Scorsese didn’t make a movie about gangsters, he made the definitive work. Where The Godfather is relentlessly operatic and grandiose, Goodfellas is brutal, blunt, precise, and terrifying in its excellence. Much like the iconic scene in High Fidelity, if you haven’t seen Goodfellas yet, “I’d think that you’re a cinematic idiot and I’d feel sorry for you. ” Goodfellas is a look into the real-life doings of Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) and his associates, (Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Paul Sorvino) as they live the lives of wise guys, made men, everything they ever wanted made possible by organized crime. We meet Henry Hill at a crossroads in his life, and then go back to the very beginning of it all and see the allure in such a hard-line life. While the film showcases the wealth and affluence, the violence is relentless and unforgiving, and enacted with a shocking coldness that paved the way for shows such as The Wire. The film takes its power not from any attempt to shock or jolt an audience but instead from persistent honesty. In the same way that The Wire rings completely true in the portrayal of a floundering city beset with a drug war, Goodfellas is likewise a portrait of a specific moment in time. Scorsese, in his quest for intentionality, has captured a feeling, preserving it forever. Goodfellas is directly taken from the real life of Henry Hill. These are his people, and this is his story. Though the sundries appear tempting as Hill continually reminisces fondly on the money and the power, Goodfellas is not romantic, nor does it pander, from the broadest of strokes right down to the polished details. You walk away sick at heart, envious of not a single character, left with the lingering suspicion that everyone was given what they asked for, whether they knew it or not. There are several smaller documentaries included on the disc, including a half hour documentary called “Getting Made,” which chronicles the directorial choices made by Martin Scorsese, from the challenge of directing such a talented cast to the details surrounding the all-important musical choices. Scorsese makes some stylistic choices in this film that are outlined in great detail, from the careful costuming to the rehearsal of improvisation; there are scenes in Goodfellas that wrote the book for film students everywhere. The commentaries are filled with all the gooey details you’d expect from Scorsese and the people he’s worked with that provide insight into nearly every directorial move he made. The infamous three-minute steadi-cam shot that follows Henry and Karen through the backdoor and into the kitchen of the Copacabana up into the limelight wouldn’t be what it is without the sounds of The Crystal’s “Then He Kissed Me” backing it. There are plenty of interviews — though many are from 1990 — with Scorsese, Liotta, Lorraine Bracco, we even hear from the producers, as well as Scorsese’s longtime editor (Thelma Schoonmaker), about every facet of the production. Also included on the disc are “The Workaday Gangster,” a short doc meant to further investigate the gangster lifestyle, and “Made Men: The Goodfellas Legacy,” which is solely comprised of filmmakers gushing about the impact Scorsese had on their film careers. Also enclosed is the 2008 film “Public Enemies: The Golden Age of the Gangster,” but this and the supplemental materials are not in 1080p. The Special Edition booklet it is encased with is well-designed and interesting, featuring background information on all the major players as well as an unattributed essay about the film itself. If you haven’t seen it already, you absolutely should see it on Blu-ray. The Blu-ray transfer is gorgeous, and the sound is perfection. Though this edition lacks any specific notes on the sound and visual quality, it appears to be the same Blu-ray edition that was already released in 2007. There appeared to be several small nicks and scratches here and there that could have been fixed for the re-release, or perhaps new supplemental materials could have been included. If you’ve never purchased the film on Blu-ray, then this is definitely a fine edition, though it smacks lightly of Warner Bros. attempting to squeeze a few more dimes out of a classic. If you already own the film, then give this edition a pass, but if you always knew you wanted to be a gangster, well, this is it.
